Teeth of Love is a slow recording of an era of swift change that will satisfy those who like their Chinese films to portray a slice of the spiritual and emotional transformation to modernity. This small-scale drama from director Zhuang Yuxin is set in the time period from 1977 to 1987 when China underwent rapid social and economic shifts after the long and turbulent "cultural revolution" (1966-76).
The film was part of this year's Deauville Asian Film Festival, and won Best First Feature at the 14th Beijing Student Film Festival, an accolade similar to the director award for a maiden film.
Teeth of Love's main character, Qian Yehong, has different identities in different times: a female gangster in the days of social turmoil, a student at medicine school, an unlucky female laborer, a wife in a dull marriage. However, what she has really experienced at the bottom of her heart is not the social changes, but the tangling relationships among love, pain and memory. After ten years being with three men, she suddenly realizes that pain is a shortcut to love.
Zhuang, who also teaches at Beijing Film Academy, has written screenplays for many television dramas, but Teeth of Love is his first directing feature film.
From a male director's view, Zhuang captures the life changes of an ordinary woman who experiences love at different stages of modern history in China. But the director doesn't want to focus too much on the historical background.
"All I want to record is the pain of love accompanying the growing up of a woman," he said. "Every step in her life, there is a relationship bringing her joy and pain."
In theme, as well as in style, pictures are simple and pure, without too much flashy and wordy lines and settings to intentionally stimulate tears.
The difference here is that though the woman has the pain of various stages of her love affairs, from gangster attacks to an abortion, she still believes in love and sticks to her goal of finding it.
Leading actress, Yan Bingyan said: "A woman has much more endurance of pain and tenacity, while a man has power which can change a woman as time goes by."
From Jiang Wen's In the Heat of the Sun, and Wang Xiaoshuai's Shanghai Dreams to Gu Changwei's Peacock, directors center on the 1970s-1980s of China, when the rapidly changing times weighed heavily on people's dreams and lives. Zhuang's Teeth of Love joins them, though his project may offer audiences something more.
