      Critics Consensus

A hauntingly beautiful meditation on humanity, Devs' slow unfurling may test some viewers patience, but fans of Alex Garland's singular talents will find much to chew on.

Lucy Mangan Guardian It's a deep, dark, wild ride. How much of it deals in pure imagination and how much of it is grounded in stuff already here I don't know. And please - nobody tell me. It's better this way. Rated: 4/5 Apr 16, 2020 Full Review John Anderson Wall Street Journal The tone is paramount -- listen on headphones if possible. And the visuals are arresting. (If you must watch on a laptop, lie on the couch and put it on your chest.) It's a cerebral show, albeit one that just might get under the skin. Apr 16, 2020 Full Review Ed Cumming Independent (UK) Its ambition, design and cinematography are beyond almost anything else attempted for the small screen. Rated: 4/5 Apr 16, 2020 Full Review Michael Clark Epoch Times With the exception of the average “Men,” Garland’s three other features don’t contain a single ounce of narrative fat; every shot, word of dialogue, silent glance, source song and note of the score are there for a reason. The same can be said for “Devs.” Rated: 5/5 May 9, 2024 Full Review Elisa Guimarães Collider Created, written and directed by Garland, Devs tells, over the course of eight episodes, a thrilling story full of twists and turns centering our relationship with technology. Feb 2, 2024 Full Review Sarah Ward Concrete Playground A series that does what all the very best sci-fi stories do: tackle big existential questions and intimate everyday emotions in tandem, all while asking 'what if?'. Always Be C For me,- Devs and the amazon series (Tales from the loop) are the greatest Sci-Fi series of the last 10 years. truly outstanding. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/20/24 Full Review Sara W I just can’t believe they cast the main actress. She’s so bad it’s unwatchable Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/07/24 Full Review WarDriver84 This show is so high concept it isn't easy to understand but it took me in and made me watch it again, the music is such a big part of the experience, the visuals are well made. Acting could be a bit better but none the less a great feat of daring to step out of the box, compared to what the rest is doing over and over again. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/04/24 Full Review Meggy V It's truly incomprehensible how such atrocious acting can get you the lead role in a big show like this. It ruined the mood of every scene and made the already bad writing even worse. Cinematography and sound were nice. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/17/23 Full Review Joseph L This series has some mind blowing moments. The acting and production values are top notch. That said, I did not find the finale satisfying. IF everything is true in regards to the fact about all of the characters never really participating in life, then why should I care about these characters and what happens to them. This series left me oddly feeling nothing in regards to moments that appeared designed to usher an emotional response. Given their own universe, they seemed to sap any reason I should want to know or care what happens to these people. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/18/23 Full Review Butler C I think it should be watched at least twice. If you liked it the first time, you'll probably love the second viewing. It has a feel to it that I've never come across from any other film or series. The music with each separate sequence seems made for it. Each character is humanly real which I'm not used to anymore because most cinema is dead; purely formulaic and dreadfully boring. And even though this series moves very slowly, it does so with perfect intent which kept me fully engaged. The ending is not what I'd expected, but I'm not sure what I expected to begin with! Therefore, I was completely satisfied with the outcome. I watched it twice within two weeks which is a first in my 66 years of watching thousands of films. I wouldn't be surprised to find myself going back for thirds, at some point. For me…that's a near impossibility. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
