John Serba Decider The eight-episode series seeks the sweet spot between wild, almost-slapstick comedy and the technical prowess of American prestige TV - and fearlessly depicts the type of taboo smut that fueled Muranishi's notoriety. Aug 9, 2019 Full Review Brenden Gallagher The Daily Dot The Naked Director tries to strike a balance between raucous sex comedy and action-packed underworld narrative in this tale of a pornographic revolution. Gian P From cast, staff to script, everything is flawless. I thought it was another American Pie-ish comedy but didn't realize I was so hooked with the story. The erotic element is totally not in my mind. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review David H I'm in two minds over this one. On the one hand, it's funny and raunchy, a different cultural viewpoint is always a trip, and I'll root for a well-played underdog any day. On the other, whatever it has to say about sex, relationships, authority might not actually be very enlightened or liberating, the pacing between the raunchy bits can be rather plodding, and most of the characters aren't at all as well-developed as an 8-episode series should allow. Overall, it's Breaking Bad meets Squid Game meets Hot Girls Wanted, but not really. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Finally a Series That Is Not Afraid Of The Other Side Of Human Nature And Fetishes Told Through Point Of View Of Both Genders. Using a Real Figure To Tell An Original Story With Great Writing And Wonderful Performances Not Only For Sex And Nudity But Characters As People Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I have to admit initial scepticism but here is a series with great humour surrounding an element of Japanese culture that's largely unexplored or misunderstood. The English subtitles are a good translation and remain true to the sense of what's being said whilst maintaining dramatic and comedic sense. The result is a good romping adventure with likeable central characters and some devious villains. It's a Japanese series and unlike western made offerings the the Yakuza, police, and characters are represented in a way that's dramatic but rooted in an authentic reality This alone makes it an interesting watch (especially if you're sick to death of the western idealised view of Japan). Being inspired by real events and characters the only criticism is that it perhaps glosses over some of the darker realities, but taken as a pure piece of entertainment (and it should be) the series draws you in and keeps you on the hook. what could have been a hackneyed series relying on titillation and cliche is by turns absurd, dark, joyous, and illuminating. I Hope the second series continues with success. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review christopher n Surprisingly awesome. The series brings you a fresh and eyes-opening topic to a world where the whole world would know of the final products, but not the dedication of the crews behind the scene.
