A foreign spy using the Sorge alias is assigned to Tokyo the capital of Japan just prior to the outbreak of World War II and in the midst of the Japanese imperial ambitions in Eastern Asia. The spy becomes acquainted with a sympathetic communist who like he is attached to the ideals of freedom and rule of the masses. Sorge is able to feed the Soviet Union useful information regarding the Axis allies and their movements in Asia and beyond.

it's very funny to me that this shinoda retrospective ends on a film starring the big baddie from the resident evil movies. the axis powers: this film's "trinity of bitches?"
reminded me of black book in the sense that you've got a lush, classy but not unprovocative spy thriller made by a respected director after a string of misfires, made more authentic by both shinoda and verhoeven growing up in this time period within their respective countries. but shinoda's entire output is seeping with the psychological damage wrought by ww2, so ending with a film such as this isn't unsurprising. what is surprising and elevates this above the usual period trappings is that it's protagonist and his…
Spy Sorge (2003) is the most recent film from New Wave auteur Masahiro Shinoda, then aged 74, about the famous Russian spy Richard Sorge. Sorge (played by Scottish actor Iain Glen) is a fascinating figure who was spying in Shanghai when he made Japanese contacts that led him to be based in Tokyo from 1940-1941 before being arrested by the Keimptai (Japanese secret police). His Japanese agents Ozaki (played by Masahiro Motoki most well-know for his role in the Oscar award winning Departures) and Miyagi (Toshiya Nagasawa) were also captured and executed. This is the last film of Masahiro Shinoda, one of the greatest film directors of all time. It is excellent and features an exquisite score by Shin’ichirō Ikebe. This is only its third review on here, which shows that Letterboxd still has a long way to go. There are still Shinoda films that have not been added to this platform, which is inexcusable for a director of his caliber. Can someone please at least add Clouds at Sunset ('67)?
Shindo’s last film before he officially retired is a historical biography of the titular Soviet spy (played by Iain Glen, probably best known for his appearance in The Game of Thrones) and his comrades working at Japan pre and during WWII. It’s three-hour long with high production value for the recreation of the era, focusing on the political intrigues and conspiracy more than serving as an espionage thriller, Spy Sorge works like a miniseries by its leisure pacing. This is perhaps Shinoda’s most ambitious film in scope, but it never reaches the immensity it intended, and the lack of dramatic tension is a challenge for its three-hour running time.
