Tabi no omosa, Journey into Solitude,
you lonely traveler,
no wonder you feel lost.
a wandering story about a girl who embarks on a journey
to find herself and the meaning of life. i really adore how
this lonely journey defines the girl's behavior as traveling
rather than some running away story. the girl left her
mother, with a longing, wandered to travel, to explore the
possibility and the unknown, to find freedom and a better
life. in the process of searching for beauty, what she will
see is more ugly and filthy. her expectations will be
broken, but she will gain introspection and growth from
her experience.
the letter written by the girl to her mother describes her
mental state, explains the cause, and describes…
Saitō's images are once again are very impressive and he has great ability to craft atmosphere. The material here has potential but it doesn't reach the desired levels, the character work could have been lot stronger, it gets tad repetitive and it goes little weird at times which felt forced but otherwise a decent coming-of-age tale about growing up facing the realities of life, getting out to know the tough world to find a place for yourself in it, making it on your own, finding that freedom and peace of mind escaping the norms and standards of society.
Trying to put my finger on what set this otherwise gorgeous movie back a bit and I think it was honestly the narrations to the mother which really felt out of place. They were sort of unnecessary.
Additionally there were a few shots that were a bit repetitive.
Mind you it’s not that I’m complaining because I didn’t like it. Rather I’m complaining because I feel like the film didn’t really live up to the full potential of what it could have been.
Koichi Saito has a great eye for lovely sceneries and this films made no exception. A nice story of a teenage girl in search of her direction in life: that's why she decides to leave her selfish mother and explore the world as a pilgrim... Rie Yokoyama plays one of the most evil woman ever committed to screen. It's a Shochiku film but it reads like a mid 70's ATG or Toho produced feature.
Getting to know a large cruel world. I'm not quite sure this ever finds the exact balance it hopes for and some of the artier trappings can feel like drawbacks, but I love a good epistolary narrative and at its best it fids a good contrast between it yearn from freedom and its costs.
"I've always known that a candle's flame is beautiful. But now, for the first time, I've also come to know the wonderful smell when it's put out."
the circus of life and its sick sense of humor only worth laughing at when it's by choice.
another proof of why men shouldn't make a film about something they will never understand
