      Audience Member In Autumn Tale, the centre of Rohmer's world seems to shift from the moralist, who is self-conscious but hesitant in his actions, to the reverie of the imagination, who prefers to escape the pain of choice. It may be that this is a natural consequence of the characters' advancing age, but the alternate nature of the film suggests that, while there is no way of knowing their past, the status quo has almost certainly been reached out of consistent escapism. In addition to the recurring parallels of solitude - defensiveness, initiative - passivity (Magali) and realistic obsession - missed opportunity (Isabella) in Rohmer's film, this film adds a discursive element of control - conformity (two parallel pairs of subterfuges). Those who succeed are light and subtle, those who fail are strong and straightforward, and apparent conformity requires a hidden control, another form of self-referential life story from the director.
