      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Black Summer has enough undead carnage and a sinewy pace to please zombie fans, but the series suffers from scant characterization and doesn't add much storytelling meat to the genre's gnawed-on bone.

luniz 4 Works alright as a comedy. Not brought to you by Carl's Jr. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review Miguel Barbara should have put her seatbelt on. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/07/24 Full Review Wayne G This show just loves to drag scenes out, like someone walking around in the woods, or wandering a big warehouse…but after a couple episodes of this you start to get worn out. Reminds me of how Sons of Anarchy always had some slow rock song playing while some dude dragged on a cigarette for 2 minutes, or how Rings of Power basically went nowhere for episodes on end. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/24 Full Review Joe S Before long you'll be willing on the zombies Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/28/24 Full Review Jackie S Very slow episodes and chucks of episodes. It loses suspense because nothing happens for so long at times. Great example is the school building episode, it could've been so creepy and disturbing, but I found myself board. They also struggled to get you invested in the different plot lines. Some were interesting and others felt like a waste of time. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/08/24 Full Review Luca D Wanted to love this TV show, and the good photography, nice suburban settings and decent acting of Episode 1 held my hopes high… yet the storyline logic is so twisted that after 10 mins the only thought your brain processes is: "how is that even possible?". From zombies that start running like Olympic athletes after having been run over by a car and suffered multiple fractures, to humans that never seems to question what is the best way to kill a zombie "aim at the brain you moron!", to questionable ambushes in the middle of the snow among heavily armed groups in the open, where nobody seems to take cover. And what is the point of ambushing somebody in the wood, trying to kill him, when you know that he will turn and most likely will try to kill you? If these people are trying to survive, what is the whole point of the ambush? And how come you are in a school where all doors have been locked, are trying desperately to escape, yet don't think about breaking a window, which the said school is full of? Unfortunately, throughout the two series, that thought never goes away, making what should be a leisure escape in a fantasy world impossible… "how is that even possible?" The worse thing is that, like the undead, your brain also keep wanting the series to get better, leaving you with a the unsatisfied desire that never really goes away… Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

John Doyle Globe and Mail It's formally brilliant, politically loaded, terse and terrifying. Jun 10, 2019 Full Review Elisabeth Vincentelli New York Times Yet if the zombies are defined by frantic agitation, the show itself stands out from the pack thanks to a pensive, almost dreamlike economy. May 8, 2019 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com A bleak, dull affair that mistakes camera movement for narrative energy and has about as much life as the walking dead. Apr 10, 2019 Full Review Nicolas Soto But Why Tho? A Geek Community Out of the 8 episodes, only one episode managed to capture my attention. Jan 22, 2023 Full Review Jorge Loser Espinof A pure B series that doesn't concern itself with critics or what would the fans think, rising as the closest incarnation of Resident Evil...
