      What to know

      Critics Consensus

Hereditary uses its classic setup as the framework for a harrowing, uncommonly unsettling horror film whose cold touch lingers long beyond the closing credits. Read critic reviews

Hereditary is one of the most intelligent AND disturbing horror movies to grace the silver screen in ages. Ari Aster's debut is a masterpiece. {This is how you do art and horror.) What starts as a portrait of grief and multi-generational mommy issues turns into a twisted tale of familial horror, with what has to be the biggest WTF scene of any film in recent memory. The acting is fantastic -- Toni Collette puts in an Oscar-worthy performance. Her facial expressions should frankly be patented . As unsettling as it is memorable, Hereditary will likely haunt your psyche for a very long, long time.

No point treading reviews of this masterpiece of slow-burn emotional torment and blood-curdling evil written by dullards who think James Wan and 'A Quiet Place' is effective horror. This one gets under your skin, like 'The VVitch' and convinced you that the blackest magic is real.

Incredibly dull and disturbing, Hereditary is a poorly made horror film. The story follows an artist who turns to witchcraft to contact her daughter when she dies in a car accident, but she soon discovers that she's awakened an evil spirit. Toni Collette gives a fairly decent performance, but the rest of the cast is pretty bad. And the script isn't very good either, as it takes forever to get to the plot. The pacing is excruciatingly slow and the aesthetic is cold and drab. Hereditary is a trying film that's hard to watch and offers little to no payoff.

This messed up film was on my top 9 of 2018. It is a journey and it is only full of dread. There are moments that are too much and it's tough to watch. I get the divided audience review, much like The Witch. It is not straight forward horror and that is hard to gain an audience. Collette should have taken out best actress, her performance is amazing. Byrne is rock solid in support and it's great to see him in a role that deserves his presence. The film spirals to the finale and if you cannot board the train, it won't sit well for you. This is a film that audiences will find in the coming years and I feel the word of mouth will be kind. The critics loved it, but the audience was divided, which is a good thing. It will be reassessed by the audience, not the critics who have tricked the audience into thinking this is a straight forward horror film. The film has all the qualities of a horror classic to endure the test of time and I suspect this will be something of a long term cult classic. Great filmmaking and one film that will sit with you after the conclusion. 09/03/2019
