      Critics Consensus

Paterson adds another refreshingly unvarnished entry to Jim Jarmusch's filmography -- and another outstanding performance to Adam Driver's career credits. Read critic reviews

Jarmusch is the master of these low key, plotless character studies. Driver's performance is easily a career best from him.

Over the course of a week we meet Paterson (Adam Driver), a bus driver in Paterson, NJ, who is also a poet, and his live-in girlfriend, Laura (Golshifteh Farahani). This beautifully filmed gem celebrates an everyman who quietly observes life and comments on it through his writing. Laura, meanwhile, seems to be a creative soul herself, designing her own clothes, decorating their home, learning to play guitar, baking cupcakes, and all done in a black and white color scheme. Adam Driver seemed perfectly cast as a man who is not aware of his talent, but feels driven to write. Ms Farahani is stunningly beautiful and lit up avery scene she was in. I definitely want to see more of her work. There are some heavy themes (race relations, marital difficulties, and loss) addressed, but delivered with a light, sometimes humorous, touch, a Jarmusch specialty. The pace is slow, almost languid, but if one has the patience, this film touches deeply.

Extremely quiet, humble and lucid throughout, Paterson strikes many a match against the dimly lit backdrop of the genre it attempts to infiltrate. I haven't seen much of Jim Jarmusch or Adam Driver, however both seem to compliment each other fascinatingly throughout, with dreamy direction and a committed yet distant performance from Driver. As Paterson chronicles the day to day, menial things the title character does that eventually lead him to extraordinary little glimpses of beauty, love and poetry that are the results of these menial tasks. It's a positive, mood-affirming piece that definitely won't appeal to everyone as sometimes it is quite hard to watch, a little overlong and far too mild to be wholly entertaining. A beautiful little film nonetheless.

At first I didn't know what to make of this film but the performances are top notch and the film grows on you. The slow burning film has a lot of love and the poetry that our lead character reads gives the film depth that would otherwise feel like an odd choice to have in the film. The character of Paterson is brilliantly played and it's the filmmakers talent that holds our interest for the entire film. This is yet another film that showcases the talents of indie cinema, a director who doesn't change artistic integrity for a larger budget. The doesn't need a large buget to give you a deeper more complex tale, when the dog robs Paterson of something important to him, you feel for him. I can't speak anymore highly of one the best films of 2016, just incredible and the dog is easily one of the best supports. This is a must see film for any person who enjoys well crafted character films. 26-06-2017.
