"A State of Mind" offers a rare and often chilling glimpse into the culture of North Korea, the world's least visited country, which Nicholas D. Kristof recently described on the op-ed page of The New York Times as "the most bizarre . . . most regimented, militarized and oppressive country in the world."

"A State of Mind"(한국제: 어떤나라)는 차갑고도 희귀하며, 가장 방문자가 적고, 니콜라스D라는 기자가 최근 뉴욕타임즈 사설에서 가장 이상하고, 조직화 되있으며, 군사화 되있는
나라로 표현했던, 그- 북한의 문화를 보여준다.

Directed by Daniel Gordon, a British sports journalist whose first film, "The Game of Their Lives," documented the performance of the North Korean soccer team in the 1966 World Cup competition, "A State of Mind" follows two North Korean schoolgirls, 13-year-old Pak Hyon Sun and 11-year-old Kim Song Yun, as they train for a gymnastics performance in the 2003 Mass Games.

"The game of their lives"(런던 월드컵에서 세계적 축구 강호 이탈리아를 1:0으로 꺾고 8강에 진출하는 기적을 이뤄낸 당시 북한 축구단의 후일담을 담은 다큐멘터리)를 만든적이 있는 영국의 다니엘 골든이 다시한번 마이크로폰을 잡아, 북한 매스게임(김정일 생일잔치 공연?!)의 두 주인공 13살 박효선과 11살 김송연을 따라다니며 이 영화를 만들어냈다.

말그대로 정말 엄청난, 국가주의를 축하하는 이데올로기적 통합을 위해, 10만명의 공연자들이 김일성 경기장에 모인다.

The Mass Games are the result of millions of hours of preparation and training, some of which are witnessed here as the two girls report for rehearsals that, as the games draw near, can last up to 10 hours a day.

메스게임은, 백만시간의 연습과 트레이닝이 자아낸 것이라고 한다. 영화에 나오는 두여자아이의 말로는, 게임이 가까워 질수록 연습시간은 하루에 무려 10시간에 가까워진다고 했다.

On nationally mandated holidays (which include the birthdays of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il), the girls take a break to promenade with their families in remarkably joyless public spaces. Yet the pleasure they take in simple things - a picnic by the river, a romp with the family dog.

국경일(김정일, 김일성의 생일을 포함)에는 공연자들이 그들의 가족들과 지루한 산책을 즐길수 있다고 한다. 그래도, 그들은 그렇게 단순한 것 마저 즐거워 한다. (강가로 가는 소풍, 강아지와의 산책)

The families Mr. Gordon films are unusually privileged by North Korean standards. Though their apartments are cramped and barren, they have secure jobs, enough food and even luxuries like television and radio (although, as the voiceover points out, the state-supplied radio in every North Korean house is permanently tuned to the country's single government-run station and can be turned down but never off.)

골든의 영화에 나오는 가족들의 삶은 북한 삶의 기준에 비해 특권계층이라고 한다.
비록, 그들의 아파트는 불모지가 따로 없지만, 안정된 직업을 가지고, TV와 라디오 같은
호화스런 삶을 누리고 있다. (근데, 북한의 정부에 의해 관리되는 라디오 방송국은,
단지 볼륨만 줄일수 있지, 끌수가 없게 되어 있다고 한다.)

In interviews, the girls' parents openly discuss some of the hardships of life in North Korea, including the famine of the mid-1990's, referred to as the Arduous March. But the film's tone remains carefully neutral. Whatever political critique the film may contain is left implicit in the jaw-dropping final sequence, in which the girls, along with hundreds of thousands of their compatriots, finally perform their long-rehearsed dance at the Mass Games before an audience of bored-looking military bureaucrats, one of whom is seen consulting his watch during the show. As for the Dear Leader himself, a final subtitle informs us that state duties kept him from being able to attend the games at all.

인터뷰에서, 여자아이들의 부모는 '험난한 행진'이라 불려지는, 90년대 중반의 기근을 자유롭게 이야기 했다. 그렇지만 영화의 억양은 중립적인데에 그쳤다. 어떤 정치학적 비난을 영화가 담고있는지는 몰라도, 여자들이 마침내 그들의 수많은 동무들과 함께 마지막 긴-리허설을 할때에 은연중에 나타내는데에 그쳤다. - 마지막 자막에서, 지루해보이는 관료주의자들이, 시계를 보며 김정일이 그의 의무때문에 아예 게임에 참석할수가 없다고 하면서 영화는 마감한다.
